An AI That Remembers Your Plans—and Knows When to Ask
An AI can store a plan and still follow up badly. Learn how timing, relevance, time zones, restraint, and correction turn recall into a useful check-in.
An AI that remembers your plans has to do more than save a sentence. It has to understand that something will happen later, work out when a follow-up becomes relevant, and decide whether contacting you adds anything. Recall is only the first step. Timing is what makes the memory feel considerate.
“Your interview is Friday” can become a helpful “how did it go?” It can also become a reminder before the interview is over, a check-in three weeks late, or an intrusive string of notifications. The difference comes from the system around the memory.
The five jobs behind one small follow-up
Imagine you text:

For a companion to ask about it well, the product needs to handle five jobs.
1. Detect the plan
The message contains people, two times, an activity, and an implied future outcome. A memory system needs to distinguish the plan from incidental wording and avoid turning every hypothetical into a commitment.
“We’re trying the ramen place Friday” is stronger than “maybe we should try it someday.” A thoughtful system should preserve uncertainty rather than silently upgrading maybe to will.
2. Store enough context
“Ramen Friday” might support a generic reminder. “Tiny ramen place with your visiting sister” supports a meaningful callback.
More detail is not always better. A companion does not need to repeat the reservation time, address, and full menu to prove it remembers. It needs the smallest set of details that makes the future question recognizable.
3. Interpret time
Dates in conversation are often relative: tomorrow, after work, next weekend, when she lands. The service may need your time zone and a reference date to interpret them.
Delivery timing matters too. Apple’s notification guidance emphasizes accurately representing urgency and using interruption only when information is actually timely. A friendly follow-up is rarely urgent.
4. Decide whether to reach out
A stored plan is not automatic permission for unlimited messages. The companion should weigh your chosen cadence, whether you already answered, whether the event changed, whether the hour is sensible, and whether another check-in is likely to be welcome.
5. Let the memory expire or change
Plans move. Interviews get rescheduled. Visits are canceled. A useful memory should be correctable before the event and gracefully expire after its relevance passes.
That is why persistent memory differs from a context window: a product is maintaining state, not merely rereading the last few messages.

The best timing depends on the plan. A concert can be discussed that night. A job interview may deserve breathing room. A medical appointment should not be treated as casual material, and an AI companion is not a healthcare provider or a substitute for professional follow-up.
Reminder, check-in, and callback are not synonyms
A reminder arrives before an event because you want help remembering it: “Your passport appointment is at 10.” Accuracy is critical, and the product should not imply reliability it cannot guarantee.
A check-in asks about your state or preference: “Want a distraction before the presentation?” That can be welcome, but it should follow the cadence and tone you chose.
A callback returns to shared context after the event: “Did your sister approve of the ramen?” Its value is continuity rather than task completion.
Companion products often blend the three in marketing. When testing one, decide which behavior you actually want. Never rely on a companion as your only alarm, calendar, medication reminder, emergency monitor, or source of professional advice.
What a good plan memory should not do
An AI companion should not:
- invent a deadline you never gave;
- present an inference as a confirmed appointment;
- reveal a sensitive plan in a lock-screen message without clear control;
- keep contacting you because you did not answer;
- imply that silence harmed the AI;
- turn an ordinary follow-up into marketing;
- treat a missed message as an emergency;
- claim it will act in the physical world when it cannot.
Google’s People + AI guidance recommends balancing automation with meaningful user control, including the ability to adjust preferences and reset personalization. For a proactive companion, control includes the right to be left alone.
How to give an AI a plan it can interpret
You should not need rigid prompt syntax, but a little clarity helps any system.

That message supplies the event, the relevant detail, the desired action, and the timing. If you do not want a proactive text, say so:

- Did it respect silence if you did not respond?
- Could you correct or delete the underlying memory?
An AI that remembers your plans should make continuity easier, not create a second calendar you have to supervise. The ideal follow-up feels simple because the difficult timing decisions happened quietly—and because you remained in control of whether it arrived at all.
