AI Texting Services Explained: Numbers, iMessage, SMS, and Consent

Understand how an AI texting service connects phone numbers, iMessage, RCS, SMS/MMS, model providers, consent, STOP requests, delivery, and privacy.

An AI texting service lets you exchange messages with an artificial intelligence through a phone number or messaging address. The thread may look ordinary, but several systems work behind it: your device, Apple or a carrier, a messaging provider, the AI company, a model provider, memory, and delivery software.

Understanding that path helps you evaluate consent, privacy, encryption, carrier costs, delayed messages, and how to make the conversation stop.

The path of one AI text message

Imagine you send: “My interview is finally over.” A typical messaging-based companion handles it like this:

  1. Your phone creates the message. The Messages app determines which transport is available for the recipient.
  2. A platform or carrier delivers it. Apple carries iMessage; mobile carriers and their partners carry RCS or SMS/MMS.
  3. A messaging provider receives it for the AI service. The provider associates the destination number with the company’s account and delivers the content and metadata.
  4. The AI company constructs a request. It may combine your message with identity instructions, recent history, relevant stored memories, time-zone information, and safety rules.
  5. A model generates a reply. Contracted AI providers may process the request on the company’s behalf.
  6. Product systems apply controls. Safety, formatting, cadence, and delivery rules may affect the output.
  7. The response returns through messaging infrastructure. Apple or the carrier delivers it to the same thread.

The exact architecture varies. The important point is that “it arrived in Messages” does not mean one company handled the entire journey or that the AI model lives on your phone.

iMessage, RCS, SMS, and MMS are transports

Apple’s current guide explains the difference between iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS.

iMessage

iMessage is Apple’s data-based messaging service. Messages between supported Apple endpoints appear in blue and can include high-resolution media, read receipts, typing indicators, and other Apple features. Apple says iMessage is end-to-end encrypted in transit.

RCS

RCS is a carrier-provided modern messaging standard. On iPhone it appears in green and can support higher-quality media, read receipts, and typing indicators. Apple says end-to-end encrypted RCS availability currently depends on iOS version and support from all relevant carriers.

SMS and MMS

SMS carries text through the mobile carrier network; MMS adds media. They appear in green. Apple says SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted and requires an appropriate carrier plan.

An AI texting company can support one or several transports. Mia’s published terms say conversations run over iMessage where the device supports it and SMS/MMS otherwise; Warmth does not currently promise RCS delivery.

A blue bubble is not the whole privacy story

End-to-end encryption protects a message while it travels between endpoints. It does not prevent the intended recipient from reading and processing what you sent.

In an AI conversation, the service is the intended recipient. It must obtain the content to generate a reply. The company may then use contracted messaging, model, storage, security, analytics, or support providers under its privacy policy.

Ask two separate questions:

  1. How is the message protected in transit? This depends partly on iMessage, RCS, SMS/MMS, and provider connections.
  2. What happens after the AI service receives it? This depends on collection, use, provider contracts, retention, access controls, review, training, and deletion.

Apple’s iMessage security overview explains its transport architecture. The companion company’s privacy policy should explain the rest.

Warmth’s Privacy Policy says it uses encryption in transit and at rest, restricts and logs access, and does not sell conversations or train publicly available foundation models with them. Contracted model providers may not train their own models on the content. Warmth may use conversations to operate, evaluate, and improve Mia, including limited safety and quality review with minimization and de-identification where possible.

Why phone verification exists

An AI texting service generally needs to verify that you control the phone number you submit. Otherwise, someone could enroll another person in recurring automated messages without permission.

A common flow is:

  1. you enter a mobile number;
  2. the service sends a one-time verification code;
  3. you enter the code on the website;
  4. the service records that the number was verified and the messaging terms were accepted;
  5. the ongoing AI conversation begins.

Verification is not a guarantee that every future message is appropriate. It establishes control of the number at signup. The service still needs accurate sender identity, clear frequency and cost disclosures, accessible terms, and a working opt-out.

Mia’s setup verifies the mobile number and records confirmation that the user is 18 or older. Warmth stores the age confirmation rather than a date of birth.

In the United States, automated texts are governed by rules that vary with message content, technology, consent, and context. This article is a product explainer, not legal advice. The practical consumer standard is straightforward: recurring AI messages should not surprise the person receiving them.

Before consent, a service should state:

  • who will send messages;
  • that messages may be recurring and automated;
  • what categories may arrive—conversation, account, billing, or marketing;
  • that frequency can vary;
  • whether message and data rates may apply;
  • that marketing consent is not a condition of purchase where applicable;
  • how to opt out and get help;
  • links to terms and privacy information.

The Federal Communications Commission’s 2024 consent order strengthened the right to revoke consent through reasonable methods and addressed prompt handling of opt-outs. A 2025 FCC notice explains the compliance timeline for several amended rules.

Warmth’s Terms describe consent, message categories, variable frequency, carrier charges, supported opt-out words, and support contact details.

What STOP should do

For a legitimate consumer texting program, replying STOP should end further messages from that sender, apart from a permitted confirmation. Related standard keywords can include END, CANCEL, UNSUBSCRIBE, and QUIT, depending on the service.

Three actions can still be different:

  • Opting out of messages: stops the phone number from sending texts.
  • Cancelling a subscription: stops future renewal charges under the membership terms.
  • Deleting an account and data: starts the provider’s documented deletion process.

Do not assume that one automatically completes all three. The company should explain each action plainly.

With Mia, STOP, END, UNSUBSCRIBE, and QUIT stop messages from the number, and one confirmation follows. CANCEL stops messages and cancels a paid membership. START can resume messages, but it does not reactivate a cancelled membership; HELP provides assistance. None of these commands deletes the account or conversation data. The current cancellation paths are in the Terms, while account and data deletion are described in the Privacy Policy.

Delivery can fail even when the AI works

Text messaging is not a guaranteed real-time channel. A message can be delayed, duplicated, delivered out of order, or lost because of:

  • weak signal or unavailable data;
  • carrier filtering;
  • device or platform outages;
  • a number changing owners;
  • unsupported media;
  • a switch between iMessage and SMS/MMS;
  • messaging-provider incidents;
  • the AI service itself being unavailable.

An intelligent response generated at the right time can still arrive too late. This matters for reminders and follow-ups. It matters even more for safety: an AI texting companion must never be treated as an emergency channel.

Mia is not monitored in real time, cannot contact anyone on a user’s behalf, and is not an emergency service. In immediate danger, contact local emergency services.

Message metadata matters too

Privacy discussion often focuses on content, but an AI texting service also handles metadata. That can include:

  • phone number;
  • sender and recipient routing details;
  • timestamps;
  • delivery and failure status;
  • message transport, such as iMessage or SMS;
  • media type and file size;
  • opt-in and opt-out events;
  • device, log, or security information.

Metadata lets the service deliver messages, troubleshoot failures, respect STOP, prevent abuse, and bill correctly. It can also reveal routines and communication patterns, so retention should be disclosed.

Warmth’s current policy lists message metadata and says opt-out suppression records may be kept indefinitely so a STOP request continues to be honored even after other account data is removed.

How to evaluate an AI phone number before texting

  1. Find the operator. A character name is not enough; identify the legal company and support address.
  2. Read the consent language. Look for message type, frequency, rates, automation, and opt-out.
  3. Check the transport. Confirm iMessage, RCS, SMS/MMS, geography, carrier, and fallback behavior.
  4. Read the privacy policy. Focus on content, metadata, providers, model training, review, retention, and deletion.
  5. Separate controls. Know how to stop messages, cancel payment, and delete the account.
  6. Verify AI disclosure. The sender should never rely on a realistic tone to impersonate a person.
  7. Keep high-stakes needs elsewhere. Delivery and generated output are both fallible.

An AI texting service can make sophisticated conversation feel as simple as saving a contact. The trustworthy version does not hide the infrastructure behind that simplicity. It tells you who receives the message, how it travels, what the AI does with it, what it costs, and exactly how to make it stop.
