What is a virtual character?
A virtual character is a generated conversational persona: someone—or something—with a name, voice, appearance, backstory, and behavioral rules. The character might be an original detective, an interpretation of a public-domain figure, a fantasy rival, a game master, or a sleep-deprived barista in a supernatural café.

Problems begin when a product deliberately blurs the frame. A virtual character should not imply that a generated fantasy is a verifiable real-world event. A companion should not claim a human body, professional license, or consciousness it cannot establish. A realistic avatar or voice increases the need for disclosure rather than reducing it.
This boundary matters even when the user actively wants immersion. “Stay in character” and “pretend you are secretly a human operator” are not the same request. A product can support a vivid scene while remaining clear that the scene is generated.
Memory works differently in each experience
Memory is valuable to both categories, but the target differs.

Both are hard. Language models have limited context, stored facts can conflict, and a retrieved memory may be irrelevant. A roleplay system can ruin a story by revealing knowledge a character should not have. A companion can break continuity by confidently calling your brother your roommate.
